The 1975 North Carolina Prison Uprising: Archival Activations No. 82024
Design for 8th issue of the Archival Activations zine series—a multi-year project for activating Mariame Kaba’s personal collection through publications. The Raleigh Revolt, as some historians refer to it, was one of the most significant women’s prison actions of the 70s. It challenged stereotypes of incarcerated women as passive victims and shed light on the horrific and violent exploitation of Black women in prison. It also demonstrated that active resistance could be successful in changing conditions inside. This zine provides historical background about the uprising and includes a foldout illustration.
